HarassMap is an Egyptian initiative incubated by Nahdet el Mahrousa that aims at raising awareness about sexual harassment in the country and changing the people's attitude towards it. The initiative does so by addressing the lack of data related to sexual harassment and violence against women in Egypt, a problem that is due to the social stigma that prevents victims to report the accidents. The approach used tries to overcome such issue by making use of crowd-sourcing as data collection method, and adopting new technologies to encourage victims of harassment and violence to report anonymously through social media platforms, SMS and other applications, an approach which made the initiative successful and replicated in other countries. The reports are then tracked, mapped through an open source software originally developed by Ushahidi and the data can be used to analyze the phenomenon and responding to the issue. On the HarassMap website, victims of harassment or violence can also find out how to seek for legal and psycho-social support and access other relevant services.
