The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have teamed up on a US $2.5 million project to empower Yemeni women and bring solar technology to families in need.

Launched in November 2024 and wrapped up in Ocotber of 2025, the initiative trained 375 women in solar technology and business skills in Hadramout and Lahj governorates. It distributed solar ovens and lanterns to over 21,375 vulnerable people, while setting up a team of 31 trainers to keep the work going.

The first part of the project focused on practical infrastructure: solar lanterns and ovens for homes, tools and training kits for women, and creating local production capacity. The second part aimed to build lasting livelihoods and boost women’s economic role in renewable energy.

UNDP’s Yemen Resident Representative said the project is about more than clean energy: “By equipping women in Yemen with renewable energy skills, we are building a foundation for long-term economic empowerment.”

This effort reflects a shift toward sustainable development in Yemen: combining humanitarian aid with economic opportunities, and putting women at the centre of change. The KSrelief-UNDP partnership aims to deliver clean energy, new jobs and stronger communities across Yemen.
