The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said that it will be cutting its 2026 budget by 17%, bringing it down to 1.8 billion Swiss francs, which is about $2.23 billion. They’re also planning to cut around 2,900 jobs across the globe.
Donations have dropped off sharply. The ICRC blames this on big donors turning their attention and money toward defense and security instead of humanitarian aid. Mirjana Spoljaric, the ICRC’s president, called the decision tough but said it’s the only way to keep helping civilians caught in conflict zones. About a third of the layoffs will come from voluntary departures or simply not filling open positions.
Even with these cuts, the Red Cross says it’ll keep working in over 90 countries, zeroing in on the most urgent crisis areas in places like Sudan and Gaza.
This shows the pressure groups like the ICRC are under. Donor fatigue is real, and as wars and displacement keep spreading, aid groups are increasingl trying to keep up with all the growing needs.
