UN Increases Lebanon Aid Appeal as Needs Continue to Rise
The United Nations has increased its humanitarian appeal for Lebanon to nearly $640 million as more people need support due to the ongoing conflict. The funding would help around 1.4 million people across the country.
The new request is an additional $331.5 million that will almost double the amount that was initially requested in early 2023. As of May 31, only 29% of requested funds had been received and there is a considerable gap between what has been requested and what has been received.
According to the UN's assessment, the armed conflict has resulted in many people being displaced from their homes; the destruction of health care facilities and farmland; and an increasing number of people unable to obtain basic services or support themselves.
Food shortages are also becoming a major concern. The UN estimates that about 1.24 million people could face serious levels of hunger in the coming months. Aid agencies say more funding is urgently needed to provide food, healthcare, shelter, and other essential support to vulnerable communities across Lebanon.
