Young entrepreneurs in Sudan are turning local challenges into business ideas through a programme supported by the International Labour Organization (ILO). In Kassala State, 38 youth-led startups presented projects focused on livelihoods, community services, and economic resilience.
The initiative, known as i-UPSHIFT, brought together young people from refugee and host communities in and around Shagarab Refugee Camp. Participants received mentorship, training, and business incubation to help transform their ideas into practical social enterprises.
Around 500 young Sudanese took part in the programme, which aimed to improve employment opportunities in communities affected by displacement and economic hardship. According to the ILO, the project also encouraged cooperation between refugees and local residents while strengthening local economies.
Despite Sudan’s ongoing crisis, many young people continue searching for opportunities through innovation, digital skills, and entrepreneurship.
