The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched a self-care handbook to help Syrian men living in Germany identify and address psychosocial and social challenges.
These experiences and challenges could include, for example:
- Having to build new social networks
- Feeling lonely
- Difficulty staying in touch with Syrian friends and family
- Navigating a new culture, as well as new structures and systems
- Learning German
- Experiencing discrimination and rejection
- Uncertainty about the future
- Unemployment
The handbook enables Syrian men to better understand their feelings and emotions, as well as their bodies’ reactions to stress factors. The handbook does not offer generic solutions to common problems. Rather, it can be a guide to identifying the strengths and resources that an individual possesses, and which they can use to face and overcome difficulties.
The handbook, which was funded by the German Federal Government for Migration, Refugees and Integration, includes an overview of organizations providing various forms of support to Syrian men and their families to help them address the challenges they face.
