Featured Project: EU’s €12M ‘Green Forward’ Initiative Accelerates Green and Circular Economy Transition Across Eight Mediterranean Countries
Featured Project
Green Forward is an EU-funded regional initiative that supports the development of Green and Circular Economy (GCE) across eight Southern Mediterranean countries: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, and Tunisia. This 48-month project, with a budget of €12 million, will contribute to the objective of the regional Team Europe Initiative “Jobs through Trade and Investment in the Southern Neighbourhood” to foster decent job creation through increased levels of trade and investments, as well as to contribute to an inclusive economic recovery through improved skills and entrepreneurship.
Green Forward Policy fosters long-term partnerships and institutional coordination by aligning country-level efforts with EU Green Deal objectives and global sustainability goals. The program also supports capacity building and communication strategies that empower stakeholders to champion sustainable practices in targeted sectors across the region. Green Forward initiative aims to accelerate the region’s transition toward a resilient, resource-efficient, and inclusive economic model, by creating shared spaces for dialogue, generating actionable insights, and amplifying local innovation.
Three complementary components operate across macro, meso, and micro levels through a partnership approach.
- Expertise France leads at the macro level (policy level), advancing policy frameworks in the Mediterranean. This track helps governments create green laws, national policies, and safety standards. It runs from 2024 to 2027 with a €4 million budget.
- SPARK manages the Meso level (Support level). this track strengthens Business Support Organizations (BSOs) and enabling green start-ups in selected value chains. These groups act as a bridge between official government policies and small businesses.
- UNIDO manages the Micro Level (Industry level). This track gives direct technical help and green finance access to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), i.e. piloting industry and enterprise-level interventions, until 2028.
Together, the partners work to ensure alignment between national strategies and local implementation.
